While Southern Right Whales steal most of the spotlight in Hermanus, another ocean giant is cruising our coastline — the Bryde’s Whale (pronounced BROO-dus). Sleek, mysterious, and fast, these whales are often spotted year-round in Walker Bay and along South Africa’s coastline. Let’s dive into some fascinating facts about this lesser-known baleen beauty.

What Makes Bryde’s Whales Unique?
Bryde’s Whales are part of the baleen family, just like Southern Right and Humpback Whales — but they stand out with a few special features:
-
They have three distinct ridges running along the top of their heads (most whales only have one!).
-
Their backs are dark bluish-grey with a sleek, torpedo-like shape.
-
Adults can grow up to 15 meters long and weigh around 25–30 tons.
-
Unlike Southern Right Whales, Bryde’s Whales have a small, curved dorsal fin — easy to spot when they surface.
What Do They Eat?
Bryde’s Whales are true ocean foodies. Instead of krill, like many baleen species, they prefer small schooling fish such as sardines, anchovies, and mackerel. They’re often seen lunging through bait balls — a spectacular sight when seabirds dive around them, and dolphins join the feast.
When Can You See Them in Hermanus?
Here’s the exciting part — Bryde’s Whales are present year-round! While Southern Rights visit Hermanus from June to November, Bryde’s Whales call Walker Bay home throughout the seasons. You might spot them on calm days, often alone or in pairs, surfacing briefly before diving deep again.
The Bryde’s Whale’s Name
The species is named after Norwegian businessman Johan Bryde, who helped establish South Africa’s first whaling station in the early 1900s. Thankfully, today we celebrate these whales for their beauty and grace, not for their oil.

How to Spot a Bryde’s Whale
If you’re lucky enough to join Hermanus Whale Watchers on a calm day, keep your eyes peeled for:
-
A tall, narrow blow that rises quickly.
-
A slender body that moves smoothly through the waves.
-
That small, curved dorsal fin breaks the surface just after the blow.
They can be shy and unpredictable, but when they do appear — it’s pure magic!
